Internationle Youth Forum 2014 Seliger ( Russia)

Since 2005, Youth Forum Seliger has been a platform for active and involved youth from across Russia.
2010 was the year the forum went international – attracting highly motivated, highly qualified young leaders from across the world.
Inspirational young people and speakers gather each year deep in Russia’s forests, at the picturesque setting of Lake Seliger.
This unique blend of practical workshops and educational sessions quickly drew interest from hundreds of students world over.
Over 750 people from over 80 countries in the world participated in 2010.
Seliger participants, Seligerians, spread the word over the internet and social networks, sharing their photos, memories, impressions and videos on youtube.
Each year International Seliger grows and changes, as it takes on board suggestions from participants about how it can be better – and deliver more.
From lectures and group workshops, the educational program expanded to include master-classes and talks by internationally respected experts.
In 2012 the program grew again – this time to include inspirational talks by youth leaders: for young people, by young people. These changes help Seliger grow – there are more and more applicants each year.
In 2012 Seliger community grew much bigger and we've got some tangible achievements to boast:

1. Intenational Seliger hit top 10 'awesome student conferences around the globe' (http://www.globalsummerschool.org/?p=485)

2. International Seliger is part of the Action Plan for 2013 between The Russian Federation and the Council of Europe in the sphere of youth policy.

3. We partnered with a Seliger alumnus' project http://www.heysuccess.com/ which we consider a promise of more successes and victories to come for us in 2013!

We (the OC) want to thank you all for the tremendous input and look forward to seeing your growth, your victories, your success stories and, mainly, YOU at International Seliger 2013!

Global Challenges in Energy and Water .

Water scarcity and the environmental impacts of energy use are challenges of great and increasing importance to the future of human civilization. A rapidly expanding global population and an accelerating increase in the standard of living for a growing middle class have put relentless pressure on water and energy resources. We live at a critical time in human history, when technological advancement, economic globalization, and the rapid spread of consumer capitalism have led to an unprecedented increase in the
world's population.

Tremendous opportunities now exist to change our methods of using and producing clean water and power. There is a great need to do this, as a growing population, changing climate, and modernizing global civilization all demand more resources today at the expense of our ability to continue to meet these demands into the future. We live unsustainably and have no choice but to act or wait for the consequences of inaction.

We must develop additional water resources; reuse, to the extent possible, the water resources we have; and ensure that the quality of this water is sufficient to prevent the spread of pathogens and ingestion of contaminants. This effort will include the need to desalinate seawater and brackish waters, and we must carry out this effort without relying on energyintensive methods that will worsen the causes of the water scarcity we are attempting to address.

Desalination of water near the dense coastal populations of the world may further allow for higher levels of natural freshwater availability in inland regions and in those areas which do not have urban power generation infrastructure. This technology, and others that may also contribute in similar ways to the sustainable production of water, must be aggressively pursued.

We must also improve our use and production of sustainable energy resources. A combination of a number of energy technologies will likely be necessary: nuclear and geothermal energy, capable of providing substantial baseload power; as yet to be developed energy storage technologies, coupled with renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and tidal power to provide consistent mid- and peak-level power supply; and the use of transportation-compatible biofuels that do not compete with food production.

Each year, GSEC brings the world to UW: a select group of semi-finalist student teams from around the globe are invited to Seattle for GSEC Week. Teams visit regional companies, present their business ideas to judges, and compete for up to US$30,000 prizes that go to the most innovative social business ideas targeting poverty alleviation in developing economies.
GSEC provides cross-cultural, transformational practical learning experiences for student participants to hone their business skills, expand their networks, and access new resources.  Through exposure to iconic global companies, a vibrant international development sector, leading research institutions, GSEC Week provides exclusive opportunities for semi-finalist teams to benefit from invaluable resources and expertise in the Seattle region. Each year more than 150 professionals provide invaluable expertise and resources as mentors, judges, and sponsors.  We welcome this essential support, from individuals at organizations like Costco, Gray Ghost Ventures, Microsoft, PATH, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Smith Barney, Seattle International Foundation, the Grameen Foundation, and the Washington Global Health Alliance.
